Where it came from
Drana's Chosen was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a recurring ally of the legendary vampire Drana, Liberator of Malakir, who served as a key protagonist during the battle against the Eldrazi on the plane of Zendikar. It reflects the set's focus on the 'Ally' mechanic, which rewards players for deploying groups of creatures that work in concert to buff one another during combat.
The artwork was illustrated by Dan Scott, a prolific artist in the trading card game community. Scott focused on capturing the dark, regal aesthetic associated with the Zendikari vampires, emphasizing the character's loyalty to Drana and her role in the broader conflict. Upon release, the card was regarded as a functional utility piece for limited-format play, providing a consistent way to generate tokens and reinforce board presence as the game progressed.
