Provenance

Where it came from

Reaver Drone was released in 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set, the second expansion in the Battle for Zendikar block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's Eldrazi tribal theme, specifically focusing on the colorless mana mechanic that defined the block's narrative of an otherworldly, parasitic threat consuming the plane of Zendikar.

The artwork was commissioned from Chris Rallis, who captured the grotesque, biomechanical aesthetic central to the Eldrazi brood. Rallis focused on the drone's eerie, hovering posture to emphasize its role as an expendable swarm unit. The design was received as a functional, aggressive staple for limited formats, noted for its ability to pressure opponents early in the game when paired with colorless mana sources.
