Drannith Magistrate

Drannith Magistrate was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Designed as a hoser card for Commander and other eternal formats, its primary mechanical purpose is to prevent opponents from casting spells from anywhere other than their hands, effectively shutting down mechanics like graveyard recursion, exile-casting, and commander-centric strategies. The flavor of the card reflects the fortified city of Drannith, a human bastion on the monster-ridden plane of Ikoria that strictly regulates the presence of magical beasts and unconventional magic.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a dramatic, low-angle perspective to emphasize the magistrate's imposing authority within the gates of the city. Upon its release, the card quickly became a staple in white-aligned decks across multiple competitive formats due to its high efficiency as a hate-bear. It is widely recognized by players for its ability to drastically alter the tempo of a game, often forcing opponents to prioritize its removal before they can execute their primary game plans.
