Drannith Magistrate

Drannith Magistrate was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Designed as a functional hate-bear, the card was crafted to directly address the mechanics of the set, specifically the cascade and companion keywords that dominated the competitive landscape at the time. Its primary mechanical purpose is to restrict opponents from playing spells from anywhere other than their hand, a design choice intended to stabilize the game state against strategies that rely heavily on casting spells from graveyards, exile, or the command zone.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's aesthetic of monstrous, crystalline-infused wilderness to depict the magistrate in a rigid, imposing stance. The visual design emphasizes the character's role as a sentinel of the human-centric city of Drannith, mirroring the card's mechanical function of imposing strict order on a chaotic environment. Upon release, it was immediately recognized by the player base as a powerful sideboard staple, frequently seeing play across multiple competitive formats for its efficiency as a low-cost, high-impact disruption tool.
