Where it came from
Dreadbringer Lampads was released in May 2014 as part of Journey into Nyx, the final expansion of the Theros block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the intersection of Greek mythology and the game’s unique enchantment-focused mechanics, with the Lampads serving as representations of the chthonic nymphs of the underworld in service to Erebos. The design team focused on creating cards that utilized the 'constellation' mechanic, rewarding players for playing enchantment spells by triggering effects whenever one entered the battlefield.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed to the game for over a decade. Velinov depicted the Lampads as ethereal, torch-bearing figures emerging from the shadows, capturing the somber and menacing aesthetic associated with the underworld of the Theros plane. Upon release, the card was integrated into limited play environments, serving as a tactical tool for players to grant their creatures evasion through its menace-adjacent ability, effectively embodying the terrifying and elusive nature of the mythical creatures in gameplay form.
