Provenance

Where it came from

Hubris was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the final set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the block's top-down Greek mythology theme, capturing the classic trope of a mortal or hero overstepping their boundaries and drawing the ire of the gods. Mechanically, it serves as a tempo-based bounce spell that highlights the flavor of arrogance by allowing a player to return a creature to its owner's hand while simultaneously retrieving an Aura attached to it.

The card features illustration by Chase Stone, who was tasked with visualizing the volatile interaction between mortals and the divine within the plane of Nyx. The art depicts a sense of sudden, magical displacement, emphasizing the themes of hubris and divine intervention through a striking, high-fantasy aesthetic. Upon release, it was viewed as a solid utility card in the Limited environment, appreciated by players for its ability to disrupt an opponent's board state while maintaining a consistent thematic narrative.
