Dream Stalker was originally released in the 2006 expansion Time Spiral, a set deeply rooted in the history of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a thematic emphasis on temporal instability and the return of mechanics from the game's past. The card was designed as a blue creature that rewards players for tactical deck construction, as its ability to bounce a permanent back to its owner's hand upon entering the battlefield allows for the reuse of enters-the-battlefield effects while imposing a minor drawback that requires careful resource management.

The artwork for this particular printing in the 2014 Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska was provided by Brian Despain. Despain, known for his distinct, often whimsical and slightly macabre illustrative style, rendered the Dream Stalker with his signature textured, painterly aesthetic.
