Where it came from
The Merfolk Wayfinder was originally released in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering product Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska. This supplemental set was designed to pit two iconic Planeswalker characters against one another in a ready-to-play format, utilizing a blue-aligned deck for Jace Beleren and a black-green-aligned deck for Vraska the Unseen. The card serves as a functional utility creature, reinforcing the sea-faring and exploration themes central to the Jace-themed deck.
Illustrated by artist Yeong-Hao Han, the card features a depiction of a Merfolk scout navigating aquatic terrain, consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic established for the Merfolk creature type within the plane of Zendikar. The art style emphasizes fluid movement and the mystical nature of the Merfolk civilization. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard draft-and-play inclusion, valued primarily for its ability to manipulate the top of the deck to ensure land drops.
