Where it came from
Dream Strix was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card tied to the Silverquill college, which focuses on the magic of words, shadows, and ink, the design reflects the aesthetic of the university's mascot, a creature composed of magical vapor and written spells. It was created to serve as a flying utility creature within the limited and constructed formats of the game, embodying the academic and competitive environment of the Strixhaven setting.
The illustration for this card was provided by artist Ovidio Cartagena, who utilized a distinct style to capture the ethereal and fluid nature of the Strix creature. The visual design emphasizes high contrast and magical energy, aligning with the artistic identity of the Silverquill faction. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed as a functional, low-cost flyer that rewarded players for casting certain types of spells, fitting naturally into the set's broader themes of instant and sorcery interaction.
