Where it came from
Dream Strix was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the magical avian familiars associated with the Prismari College, one of the five distinct houses at the plane's prestigious university of magic. It was designed to facilitate strategic play by providing a flying creature that allows players to discard and draw cards, reinforcing the set's thematic focus on the synergy between expressive spellcasting and tactical card manipulation.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who utilized a vivid color palette to highlight the creature's ethereal, ink-like appearance, which is signature to the Prismari aesthetic. The design reflects the college's emphasis on creative, elemental performance art, blending magical energy with a avian form. Upon release, it was recognized by players as a versatile utility card in the Limited format, praised for its efficiency in smoothing out deck composition during gameplay.
