Where it came from
Dreams of Steel and Oil was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. This card serves as a narrative piece depicting the grim reality of the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, focusing on the mechanical fallout of their war. It is designed to represent the reclamation of artifacts and the corruption of physical essence within the lore of Dominaria.
The illustration was crafted by artist Campbell White, who utilized a stark, industrial aesthetic to emphasize the theme of desolation and technological ruin. By capturing the moment debris is salvaged from a battlefield, the art reinforces the set's focus on the artifact-heavy warfare that defines the brothers' tragic history. Upon its release, players recognized it as a functional tool for graveyard interaction, valuing its thematic synergy with the set's mechanical focus on artifacts.
