Provenance

Where it came from

Drinker of Sorrow was released in 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the game's history at the time for consisting entirely of creature cards, a design choice intended to emphasize the theme of an impending war between the sliver and morph factions. As a rare black creature, the card reflects the set's focus on creature-heavy mechanics and the darker aesthetics prevalent in the Onslaught block.

The artwork was provided by British illustrator Carl Critchlow, a long-time contributor to the game known for his distinct, expressive style. Critchlow was tasked with visualizing the card's mechanical ability, which forces the player to lose life when the creature is targeted. His design captures a grotesque, melancholic figure consistent with the gothic and tribal themes that defined the visual language of the Legions set.
