Provenance

Where it came from

Dripping Dead was released as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering in February 2003. As the second set in the Onslaught block, Legions was notable for being the first Magic expansion to consist entirely of creature cards, a design decision intended to shift the game's focus toward board-heavy combat and creature-based strategies. This thematic constraint pushed the creative team to explore various archetypes of undeath and horror to fill the roster.

The card features artwork by Thomas M. Baxa, a veteran illustrator for the game known for his macabre and visceral style. Baxa’s depiction of the Dripping Dead emphasizes the grotesque, decaying nature of the creature to match the set's focus on the Scourge’s influence on the living. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional common, designed primarily to serve as a low-cost, expendable utility creature within the limited environment of the Onslaught block.
