Where it came from
Drowner of Truth was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a double-faced transformation mechanic, a design hallmark of the set intended to bridge high-complexity gameplay with themes of corruption and oceanic decay. The development team at Wizards of the Coast utilized this dual-card format to represent the thematic transition of an entity succumbing to or emerging from the depths of the Eldrazi-influenced regions.
The visual identity of the card was realized by artist Donato Giancola, who was commissioned to capture the surreal, otherworldly aesthetic characteristic of the Eldrazi in this block. The illustration focuses on the fluid, unsettling nature of the transformation, emphasizing the interplay between the organic Drowner of Truth and the biomechanical landscape of the Drowned Jungle. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its utility in graveyard-focused archetypes and its contribution to the set's broader lore regarding the influence of cosmic entities on local environments.
