Provenance

Where it came from

Dwarven Patrol was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse set, the final expansion in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed around the narrative conclusion of the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria, featuring multicolored cards that reflected the desperate alliance between the world's disparate factions. Within this context, the card represents the tactical military forces deployed by the dwarves during the global conflict.

The artwork was commissioned from Greg Hildebrandt, one of the iconic twin brothers famous for their fantasy illustrations and work on the original Star Wars poster. Hildebrandt utilized his signature style—characterized by high-contrast lighting and a painterly, classical fantasy aesthetic—to capture the rugged, vigilant nature of the dwarven soldier. While the card is a standard uncommon, it remains a notable example of the stylistic shift the game underwent as it began featuring more high-profile genre illustrators during the early 2000s.
