Provenance

Where it came from

Dwarven Ruins was released in November 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the lore of a subterranean conflict between the Order of Leitbur and the Ebon Hand, with the card intended to mechanically represent the ancestral strongholds of the dwarves. It fits into a cycle of storage lands that allow players to accumulate resources over time, reflecting the theme of ancient power being reclaimed from a crumbling civilization.

The artwork was provided by Mark Poole, a foundational illustrator for the game known for his painterly and atmospheric style. Poole utilized a muted, earthy palette to emphasize the desolate and weathered nature of the ruins. Upon its release, the card received a mixed reception from players; while the concept of storage lands was innovative for the period, the slow pace of generating mana meant it was often overlooked in competitive decks in favor of more efficient land options.
