Dwarven Ruins was originally released as part of the Fallen Empires expansion in 1994, a set designed to explore the deep lore of Magic: The Gathering through tribal themes and darker, apocalyptic narratives. The card was specifically crafted to support red-aligned decks by allowing players to sacrifice a mountain to generate two red mana, a utility mechanic that reflected the thematic concept of mining and depleting the earth for short-term gain.

The artwork was provided by Mark Poole, a prolific early contributor to the game whose style is characterized by a distinctive, painterly approach to fantasy landscapes. Poole’s depiction of the crumbling, subterranean masonry sought to evoke a sense of ancient decay and industrial exhaustion.
