What it does

Cumulative upkeep—Pay 1 life. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player sacrifices a green or white permanent of their choice.

Provenance

Where it came from

Dystopia was originally released as part of the Alliances expansion in 1996 before being featured in the 1997 World Championship Decks. This product line was designed by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the exact card lists used by the top eight finishers at the World Championship, allowing players to own and play with the same configurations as the professionals of the era.

The card’s illustration was created by Ruth Thompson, an artist known for her fantasy work during the mid-nineties. The design utilizes a stark, gothic aesthetic to convey the card's function as a punishing enchantment against green and white permanents. Within the competitive meta of 1997, the card was viewed as a potent sideboard option, specifically utilized for its ability to clear the board of specific color-aligned threats.
