Earthbind

Earthbind was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the Revised Edition in 1994, which marked the third core printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card serves as a thematic piece of green-aligned magic, designed to ground flying creatures by placing an enchantment on them that also deals damage. It reflects the early design philosophy of Richard Garfield and the original team at Wizards of the Coast, where mechanics were often directly tied to the flavor of the artwork and the fantastical nature of the game's setting.

The artwork for Earthbind was created by Quinton Hoover, a prolific illustrator whose distinctive style became a staple of early Magic sets. Hoover aimed to capture the visceral sensation of a creature being forcibly pulled from the sky, a concept that required a balance between technical card function and evocative, often controversial imagery. While the card is remembered for its striking visual composition, its historical reputation is frequently linked to the artistic standards of the early 1990s, which were eventually superseded by more standardized editorial guidelines as the game matured.
