Provenance

Where it came from

The Ebon Drake was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion, the final set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card reflects the block's focus on artifact-centric gameplay and the harsh, metallic aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin. It was created to provide a strategic disruption effect, specifically forcing opponents to discard cards, which fit within the color identity of black as defined by the game's mechanics at the time.

The artwork for the card was provided by veteran fantasy illustrator Vance Kovacs. Kovacs intended to capture the twisted, mechanical-organic hybrid nature of the creature, utilizing a dark color palette to emphasize its role as a predatory force within the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility creature, praised by players for its thematic consistency with the Mirrodin environment and its specific function in discard-oriented deck archetypes.
