Provenance

Where it came from

Echoing Truth was introduced in the Darksteel expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in February 2004. As the second set in the Mirrodin block, it focused heavily on the synergy between artifacts and the game's mechanics. The card was designed as part of the 'Echoing' cycle, a group of spells that allowed a player to return a target permanent to its owner's hand while simultaneously removing all other permanents with the same name from the battlefield, introducing a unique form of mass utility to the blue color identity.

The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a renowned fantasy and science fiction artist celebrated for his atmospheric and cinematic style. Dorman sought to capture the ethereal, liquid-like nature of the spell’s effect within the metallic landscape of the Mirrodin plane. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility, becoming a staple in both limited formats and constructed decks as a cost-effective answer to token strategies and problematic board states.
