Provenance

Where it came from

Myr Matrix was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel set, the second expansion in the Mirrodin block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the central control node for the myr, a race of autonomous, construct creatures that populate the metal world of Mirrodin. In the game's lore, these creatures were created by the planeswalker Memnarch to act as silent, efficient laborers for his grand design.

The artwork for Myr Matrix was illustrated by Mark Tedin, an artist who has been with the Magic: The Gathering franchise since its inception. Tedin aimed to capture a sense of intricate, industrial complexity, utilizing a design that emphasizes the cold, metallic nature of the Mirrodin plane. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a niche utility piece for artifact-themed decks, appreciated primarily by players focusing on tribal synergies for the myr creature type.
