Provenance

Where it came from

El-Hajjâj was first introduced in the Arabian Nights expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1993. The card was designed as part of the game's first-ever themed set, which drew heavy inspiration from the One Thousand and One Nights tales. Its mechanics, which allow the card to gain life based on the phase of the moon, were an early attempt to integrate flavor and lore directly into gameplay functionality.

The card features artwork by Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic common to the early sets, aiming to capture the mysterious and folkloric atmosphere of the Arabian source material. While it was later reprinted in the Fourth Edition as card number 134, the original design remains a quintessential example of the game’s formative era of experimental mechanics and artistic world-building.
