Where it came from
Eldritch Pact was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The card was designed as a high-impact black sorcery specifically for the Commander format, intended to reward players for running a high density of black cards in their decks by scaling its life-loss and draw effects based on the card types present in the graveyard. This set drew heavy inspiration from the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, aiming to translate the high-fantasy mechanics of the tabletop game into the tactical card-game framework of Magic: The Gathering.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Billy Christian, captures the dark, mystical essence of a forbidden bargain typical of the Baldur's Gate narrative. Christian focused on themes of occult symbolism and atmospheric shadow to ground the card in the game's broader necromantic aesthetic. Upon release, it was received as a niche but potent utility card for dedicated black-aligned decks, praised by players for its ability to generate significant card advantage while simultaneously acting as a volatile finisher in the late stages of a match.
