Where it came from
Elemental Resonance was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension set, the final expansion in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the Jund-colored mechanics introduced in the set, specifically focusing on the synergy between the green and black mana identities of the Golgari Swarm. It was conceived as an enchantment that encourages players to commit heavily to permanents with high mana costs, allowing them to effectively 'tap' their creatures to generate mana during their upkeep phase.
The artwork for the card was provided by the illustrator Dave Dorman. Known for his atmospheric and painterly style, Dorman crafted a visual representation that emphasizes the connection between the entity and the natural energy it draws from, fitting the card's mechanical theme of resonance. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed as a niche build-around piece, noted more for its unique, risk-reward playstyle than for widespread competitive dominance in constructed formats.
