Where it came from
Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant was first introduced as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow Commander set in 2021. The card features a character designed to embody the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, serving as a tactical scout within the human factions fighting against the encroaching vampire menace. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from Magic: The Gathering’s history—allows players to encounter this specific design outside of its original specialized deck release.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a muted, atmospheric palette to emphasize the character's role as a clandestine informant in a dark, rural setting. The design focuses on the synergy between Elmar and his partner, Hargilde, Kind-Hearted Heir, reflecting a collaborative mechanical structure common in the set's Partner-themed cards. Upon its release, the card was received as a nuanced support piece for decks focused on clue token generation and investigative gameplay mechanics.
