Where it came from
Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander set. The character was designed to embody the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, specifically focusing on the intersection of investigation and the macabre. As a legendary creature card, she serves as a centerpiece for decks centered around the 'investigate' mechanic, reflecting the ongoing narrative of mystery-solving within the Innistrad setting.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who rendered Eloise with a stark, atmospheric aesthetic consistent with the dark, supernatural visual identity of the set. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community for its flavorful design, which mechanically rewards players for sacrificing clues, thereby mirroring the detective work and tragic loss inherent to her lore as a spirit-investigator.
