Where it came from
Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander. The card was designed as a legendary creature for the Commander format, specifically appearing in the Coven Counters deck. It draws upon the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, representing a mystery-solving figure amidst a backdrop of supernatural intrigue and shifting alliances.
The art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and atmospheric style to capture Eloise’s investigative focus. The character’s design centers on the Dimir-aligned mechanics of investigation and graveyard recursion, aiming to provide players with a card advantage engine that rewards the sacrifice of clue tokens. It was received by the player base as a flavorful and mechanically distinct commander, particularly favored by those who enjoy complex, synergy-driven gameplay.
