Elven Palisade

Elven Palisade was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the final set in the Rath Cycle of Magic: The Gathering. During this era of the game's history, Wizards of the Coast sought to deepen the mechanical complexity of tribal synergies, focusing on defensive capabilities for green decks. The card was designed to represent the protective fortifications of elven settlements, providing a repeatable way to bolster creature toughness at the expense of mana.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Mark Zug, whose distinctively painterly and atmospheric style became a staple of late-nineties trading card art.
