Where it came from
The Elvish Champion was first introduced in the Urza's Destiny set in 1999 and was later reprinted for the Seventh Edition core set in 2001, which was notable for being the first Magic: The Gathering base set to feature modern card frames. The card functions as a core tribal lord, designed to bolster green creature strategies by granting forestwalk and a power and toughness boost to all other elves, reflecting the faction's focus on rapid growth and synergy.
The illustration for the Seventh Edition version was created by artist Daren Bader. In this iteration, Bader focused on a classic high-fantasy aesthetic, depicting the champion with flowing robes and a poised stance that emphasizes the elegance and authority associated with the elven race. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and its pivotal role in solidified elf-based decks in the competitive landscape of the early 2000s.
