Where it came from
Elvish Champion first appeared in the Invasion expansion in 2000, serving as a powerful tribal lord for green Elf decks. When it was reprinted for Ninth Edition in 2005, it became part of the first modern core set to feature card frames with the updated, cleaner layout that Wizards of the Coast had introduced two years prior. This shift marked a significant aesthetic transition for the game, aiming to make card text more legible while standardizing the visual language of the Magic: The Gathering brand.
The artwork for the Ninth Edition version was produced by Daren Bader, a long-time contributor to the game whose style is known for its high-fantasy atmosphere and dynamic lighting. Bader’s depiction of the champion was designed to emphasize the creature's status as a leader within the sylvan ranks, utilizing a lush, green-heavy color palette that aligns with the mechanical identity of the Elf tribe. The card is highly regarded by players for its straightforward, impactful ability, which provides both a power boost and forestwalk to fellow elves.
