Provenance

Where it came from

Elvish Harbinger was introduced in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Lorwyn, a plane heavily inspired by Celtic mythology and folklore. The card was designed to support the set's central tribal mechanics, specifically rewarding players for focusing on Elf-themed decks by allowing them to tutor a specific card from their library. It fits into a long tradition of 'Harbinger' cards in the game, which act as connective tissue for creature types.

The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Warren Mahy. Mahy's vision for the piece captures the ethereal and slightly mysterious aesthetic characteristic of Lorwyn's elves, focusing on their deep connection to the natural world. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in competitive and casual play, becoming a staple tool for consistency in green-aligned tribal strategies.
