Emeria Shepherd was originally printed as a rare creature in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering expansion Battle for Zendikar. Designed to emphasize the set's focus on the landfall mechanic, the card allows players to return permanent cards from their graveyard to the battlefield whenever a land enters the battlefield under their control. This ability highlights the theme of the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile, life-giving landscape and the celestial entity Emeria, whom the inhabitants mistakenly worshipped as a goddess.

The artwork was commissioned from fantasy illustrator Cynthia Sheppard, who crafted a depiction of the angelic figure tethered to the floating ruins of the plane. Her design leans into the ethereal and monumental aesthetic typical of Zendikar's celestial beings, blending serene divine imagery with the crumbling, gravity-defying architecture of the setting.
