Endless Wurm

Endless Wurm was released in 1998 as part of Urza's Saga, a set that fundamentally shifted the landscape of the Magic: The Gathering card game. As the first installment in the Urza block, the set introduced enchantments and artifacts that pushed the boundaries of power levels, often resulting in complex mechanical interactions. The Endless Wurm was designed as a high-cost green creature, reflecting the block's emphasis on rewarding players for maintaining board state, specifically through the upkeep requirement of sacrificing an enchantment.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the aesthetic of late-nineties Magic. Critchlow’s design for the Wurm leaned into the dark, organic fantasy themes common in the era, emphasizing the creature's immense scale and threatening presence. While not considered a centerpiece of competitive play due to its strict upkeep costs, it remains a nostalgic example of the game’s design philosophy during a period of rapid evolution for the trading card game's mechanics.
