Endless Scream

Endless Scream was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set expansion of the Rath Cycle, Tempest was designed to introduce more aggressive gameplay mechanics, shifting the meta toward faster, more decisive turns. The card itself was created as an enchantment that provides a creature with a power boost in exchange for a continuous resource tax, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward design philosophy prevalent during this era of game development.

The artwork was provided by fantasy illustrator Kev Walker, a prolific artist whose contribution to the game defined much of its gritty, visceral aesthetic during the late 1990s. Walker’s depiction of the 'Endless Scream'—featuring a tortured figure distorted by supernatural energy—was intended to evoke the psychological horror and instability that characterized the Black color alignment in the set. The card was received as a niche utility piece, primarily valued by casual players exploring aggressive 'Red-Black' deck archetypes.
