Provenance

Where it came from

Enslave was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set represented the final stage of the Phyrexians' conquest of the plane of Mirrodin, and the card reflects the dark, biomechanical aesthetic of the faction. Mechanically, it functions as a Control Magic variant, capturing the theme of total subjugation and corruption inherent to the Phyrexian ideology.

The artwork for the card was commissioned from illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who depicted a figure being overtaken by oily, metallic grafts. His design aimed to emphasize the invasive nature of the Phyrexians, focusing on the synthesis of organic matter and cold machinery. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its flavor-driven mechanics, which effectively translated the lore of the set into a functional gameplay experience.
