Provenance

Where it came from

The Conversion Chamber was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the final triumph of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors, as they successfully conquer the plane of Mirrodin. In the lore, these chambers serve as the horrific facilities where captured Mirrans are forcibly 'compleated,' a process that strips away organic fragility and replaces it with Phyrexian oil and cold metal.

The card’s visual design is the work of artist Igor Kieryluk, who captures the clinical, industrial menace central to the New Phyrexia aesthetic. The artwork emphasizes the harsh lighting and sterile, terrifying architecture of the Phyrexian regime. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, if mechanically niche, representation of the set's central conflict, illustrating the dark transition from living creature to soulless instrument of the machine orthodoxy.
