Where it came from
Enthralling Hold was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021, a collection designed to provide a foundational experience for players while introducing thematic elements centered around the planeswalker Teferi. The card functions as a blue enchantment within the game's mechanics, intended to offer players a way to control the battlefield by temporarily stealing an opponent's creature. It was developed to capture the flavor of telepathic or magical manipulation, fitting neatly into the color pie's emphasis on redirection and temporary ownership.
The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Known for his ethereal and painterly style, Voss sought to visualize the act of mental subjugation through swirling magical energies and the focused, commanding posture of the subject. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility piece for Limited formats, praised by the community for its thematic resonance and the clean, evocative execution of its visual design.
