Provenance

Where it came from

Enter the Unknown was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a green sorcery, the card was designed to support the set's central exploration theme, which focused on rival factions racing to discover the golden city of Orazca. Its mechanics, which involve placing a +1/+1 counter on a creature and allowing an additional land play, were intended to bridge early-game board presence with the mana ramp necessary to summon the set's large dinosaurs.

The artwork was created by Howard Lyon, a long-time contributor to the game known for his painterly, classical approach to fantasy illustration. Lyon’s design depicts a character stepping through a luminous, magical threshold into a dense, overgrown jungle, capturing the mystery and danger of the Ixalan plane. Within the community, the card was well-received by players focusing on Limited formats, where the combination of board buffing and mana acceleration offered strategic flexibility.
