Provenance

Where it came from

Entomb was originally printed in the 2001 Odyssey expansion as an uncommon card, becoming a cornerstone of black-aligned graveyard strategy in Magic: The Gathering. The Amonkhet Invocations version, released in 2017, reimagined the card as a Masterpiece Series premium foil. These cards featured a distinct, Egyptian-inspired aesthetic designed to evoke the flavor of the Amonkhet plane, characterized by an ornate, hieroglyphic-heavy frame that significantly deviated from the standard card layout.

The Invocations were illustrated to emphasize a divine, ancient quality, with this version of Entomb featuring artwork by Bastien L. Deharme. The design drew mixed reactions from the community; while many players appreciated the high-concept, thematic art, the frame's legibility and non-traditional aesthetic sparked debate among long-time collectors. Despite the controversy surrounding the presentation, the inherent utility of the card in formats like Legacy and Commander ensured its status as a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for competitive decks.
