Where it came from
Aven Mindcensor was originally printed in the 2007 set Future Sight as a rare creature. The card’s ability to restrict an opponent's search function became a staple in eternal formats like Modern and Legacy, where its disruptive presence often turned the tide of competitive games. The Amonkhet Invocations version was released in 2017 as a premium, lottery-style chase card found in booster packs of the Amonkhet expansion.
The Invocations were designed to represent the flavor of the plane of Amonkhet through a distinct, hieroglyphic aesthetic that deviated significantly from standard Magic: The Gathering card frames. The illustration for this iteration leans into a stylized, ornate Egyptian motif that emphasizes the Aven's role as a sentinel of the gods. While the divisive frame design sparked significant debate within the player community upon release, the card remains a highly recognizable artifact of Wizards of the Coast's experimentation with premium card treatments.
