Where it came from
Ephemeral Shields was released as part of the Magic 2015 core set in July 2014. Designed as a common-rarity white instant, the card was intended to provide players with a versatile defensive option, functioning as both a combat trick to save a creature and a way to trigger convoke. The card fits into the broader mechanical landscape of Magic 2015, which saw the return of the convoke keyword to reward players for building wide boards.
The card features artwork by Seb McKinnon, who sought to capture the ethereal and protective nature of the spell through his signature atmospheric style. The illustration depicts a spectral, layered shielding effect that aligns with the card's function of granting indestructible to a target creature. Upon its release, it was noted by the limited-format community as a functional, if modest, combat tool that successfully captured the flavor of divine intervention.
