Provenance

Where it came from

Erase was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered parody set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Like the rest of the set, this card was designed to subvert traditional mechanics by poking fun at the game's own rules and terminology, appearing in a satirical context that existed outside of sanctioned tournament play.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the surreal and tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Un-sets. By depicting the literal erasure of text and game elements, the card leans into the metahumorous style championed by lead designer Mark Rosewater, aiming to provide players with a whimsical alternative to the rigid, serious tone of standard-legal card expansions.
