Where it came from
Bosom Buddy was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged set, Wizards of the Coast's second silver-bordered Magic: The Gathering expansion. Designed specifically for casual play, the set embraced unconventional mechanics and humor that broke the standard rules of the game. This card, designed by Mark Rosewater, serves as a quintessential example of the set's meta-commentary, poking fun at the social dynamics often found around a gaming table.
The artwork for Bosom Buddy was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who frequently contributed to the whimsical and lighthearted side of Magic's visual identity during that era. The illustration reflects the card's theme of partnership and shared experience, utilizing a classic, colorful fantasy style that contrasts with the serious tone of the traditional tournament-legal sets. Upon release, the card was widely received as a clever piece of card design that highlights the communal, interactive spirit of casual multiplayer formats.
