Where it came from
Ertai Resurrected was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United in 2022. The card depicts Ertai, a historical character from the Weatherlight Saga, following his corruption by the Phyrexians. Its design reflects the narrative arc of his transformation into a Phyrexian agent, providing players with a versatile control tool that functions as both a counterspell and a removal effect, echoing his manipulative nature within the game's lore.
The card was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who aimed to capture the unsettling, biomechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexian-aligned characters. By emphasizing Ertai's distorted form and the influence of New Phyrexia, the art serves to ground the character's legacy within the modern era of the game's setting. The card was generally well-received by the community for its strategic flexibility and its respectful treatment of a complex figure from the game's long-standing history.
