Where it came from
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain was released in the Modern Horizons set, which arrived in 2019 as a direct-to-Modern product designed to introduce powerful, nostalgia-driven cards into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The card reimagines the legendary Captain Sisay, a central figure in the Weatherlight Saga, reflecting her evolved status as a commander capable of searching for any legendary permanent. This design choice was intended to reward players for building diverse, high-synergy decks centered around legendary themes.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy artist known for her evocative and character-focused depictions within the game. Villeneuve focused on capturing Sisay’s stoic leadership and tactical readiness, positioning her as the authoritative navigator of the Weatherlight. Upon its debut, the card was received warmly by the Commander community, quickly becoming a staple choice for players seeking a versatile, multi-color engine for deck building.
