Where it came from
Essence of Orthodoxy was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the culmination of a multi-year narrative arc involving the Phyrexians' multiversal invasion, and this card specifically highlights the resistance efforts on the plane of Ravnica, where the Orzhov Syndicate adapted their rigid, liturgical practices to defend their home against the mechanical threat.
The card features artwork by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded in the community for her intricate, ethereal style. Her design for this piece focuses on the stark, ecclesiastical aesthetic of the Orzhov, emphasizing a balance between ghostly figures and heavy, structured religious iconography. It was received as a functional, flavor-focused common that effectively captured the blend of death-based mechanics and clerical authority central to its faction.
