Where it came from
Timberland Ancient was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine. This set served as the climactic finale to a multi-year story arc involving the Phyrexians' multiversal invasion, featuring a design aesthetic that highlights the mobilization of various planes to defend their homes. The card functions mechanically as a creature that synergizes with the set's 'battle' mechanic and reinforcements, reflecting the theme of nature rising to counter mechanical corruption.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, a long-standing contributor to the game. Velinov utilized a vibrant, earth-toned palette to emphasize the organic resilience of the forest against the encroaching metallic forces of the Phyrexian armies. The piece was received by players as a solid, functional inclusion in green-aligned decks, praised for capturing the scale and defensive nature of the treefolk creatures that frequently appear in the franchise's lore.
