Where it came from
Estrid, the Masked was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured within the Adaptive Enchantment deck. This character was developed by Wizards of the Coast to anchor a theme centered on enchantments and planeswalkers, introducing a unique identity as a masked figure from the plane of Ravnica who utilizes protective magic. The inclusion of an oversized version of the card was a common practice for Commander sets at the time, providing players with a larger, display-oriented version of the primary face commander for use in casual settings.
The card was illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, whose artistic style was chosen to emphasize Estrid's mysterious, ethereal nature and her connection to her magical masks. Her design reflects a high-fantasy aesthetic that balances intricate, flowing textures with a muted, sophisticated color palette. Upon its release, the card was generally well-received by the Commander community for its innovative design that incentivized enchantment-heavy deck building, solidifying its place as a recognizable and functional piece for players dedicated to the Bant color identity.
