Where it came from
Eternal of Harsh Truths was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the desert plane of Amonkhet and the catastrophic arrival of the dragon-god Nicol Bolas. The card represents a specific type of undead construct central to the set's narrative, serving as a manifestation of the oppressive, rigid philosophy of the plane's society, which prized trial-based perfection through death.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often leans into moody, atmospheric depictions of fantasy beings. Staples utilized a palette of desaturated blues and golds to contrast the ethereal nature of the Eternal with the harsh, sun-drenched environment of the plane. Upon its release, the card was noted for its unique 'embalm' ability, which allowed players to utilize it from the graveyard, reinforcing the set's recurring theme of life and death cycles.
